This is believed to be the only known portrait of the last survivor of the Beothuk people of the area now known as Newfoundland, Canada.
The above portrait was painted by William Gosse and it is titled “A female Red Indian of Newfoundland” (1841). It is believed to be a portrait of Shanawdithit, the last recorded Beothuk woman. She died in 1829 and with her death the Beothuk people became officially extinct as a separate ethnic group. Some say that her death marks the first total genocide in North America.
It is unclear if the portrait was done based on sketches from her lifetime or oral accounts of people who had known her.

My ancestors have said that my Mi’kmaq reserve (Conne River, NFLD) actually hid some Beothuk people in order to save them from being killed off. Apparently many of them were integrated into our own families. My mother has told me that her grandparents have told her about how they truly don’t believe that Shanawdithit was the last Beothuk.

“Although Shanawdithit was the last known Beothuk, other Beothuks probably survived for a while after her death, although there is no evidence for this and none were ever seen again. Since Micmac and Beothuk are known to have interbred in Newfoundland, it is possible that a few Newfoundlanders of Micmac ancestry today may also have a distant Beothuk ancestry. However, with the burial of Shanadithit, the Beothuk effectively became extinct as a race.”

Anonymous asked: Hello! A little random, but out of curiosity, what sorts of things does your job usually have you doing? You seem to post/know a lot about a wide range of medical things so I start to wonder.

This might be because I mildly idolize medicine as a discipline and read about it for funtiems. Also my degree focuses on preventative health...

A major tip I always promote to this sort of question is to always try to challenge yourself to draw the full body when drawing any given pose. Get...
